Involuntary spasms of the muscles of the vaginal wall (vaginismus) can make attempts at penetration very painful. There is a cycle of pain that includes anticpatory pain anxiety which contributes to the tightening of the vaginal muscles. If this occurs, you might avoid intimacy or intercourse with your partner or even seeing your gynecologist in order to assess your symptoms.
If you experience one of the following you could have Vaginismus:
Ongoing painful sex
Vaginal tightness/Burning
Penetration Difficulties
Age related sexual pain
Pain after surgery or childbirth
Difficulty with tampons/gyn exams
Why do I have this?
This is a condition that is unique because it can be caused by many variables. If you have been diagnosed with Vaginismus, then it is important to understand how emotional and physical factors have, if at all, impacted you. It is important to know that sometimes there are no external or internal causes for this issue.
Emotional
Sexual Abuse/Rape
Relationship Problems
Negative family of origin
Fear of Pain
Physical
Menopause
Cancer
Surgery
Vulvar Pain
Birthing
Infections: Yeast/Urinary Tract Infections (UTI’s)
HINT: Many doctors do not understand or know about this diagnosis. If your pain persists, don’t take “I don’t know” or “This is in your head” as an answer. There are physicians who do KNOW about vaginismus and can help you find a solution to the pain.
